Wafaa Granted Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council
The United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations comprising of 19 esteemed members recommended Wafaa as a suitable candidate to secure special consultative status based on a comprehensive review of its governance policies, financial management, and mandate.
The unparalleled vision, relentless dedication and sheer commitment displayed by patrons of the Wafaa initiative was awarded and recognized on an international scale during the 19th and 20th meetings of the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, where it was proudly recommended as one of the 54 entities to be granted special consultative status by the UN Economic and Social Council.
This decision marks a historic milestone in the decade-long history of Wafaa which was established in 2008 following a commendation by the International Humanitarian Conference on Assistance for Victims of Occupation and Refugees hosted in the capital of Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta. An organization holding the special consultative status can not only attend meetings hosted by the UN Economic and Social Council but is also permitted to issue statements.
This key achievement is a testament to how Wafaa’s mission as a non-governmental organization aligns with the Social Development Goals (SDG) championed by the United Nations to transform our world. With an unwavering conviction in the principle of equality through the establishment of inclusive societies that foster sustainable economic growth, Wafaa has marched forward with a pledge to provide advancement opportunities to victims of war, injustice, and poverty through micro-financing and capacity building.
By starting out as a simple seed of kindness, the organization has grown into a strong global movement of inspiring individuals and conscientious institutions that have tremendously supported its efforts. This is why Wafaa has been able to scale a respected international peak where it stands today. With a total portfolio of $8 million that brings four families out of poverty on a daily basis, reaches over 3500 entrepreneurs through capacity building trainings and expands to nine geographical regions, Wafaa has been able to achieve a 97.6% repayment rate with no interest by making Islamic financing tools more accessible to those who previously had no means of daily sustenance but are managing successful small and medium-sized businesses thanks to the benefaction of Wafaa and many of its accredited partner organizations.
The decision undertaken by United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations shall remain a landmark in the next phase of Wafaa’s progress, as it continues to thrive as an inclusive programme. .
